On Tuesday, November 9, 2021, the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribal Education Agency Board of Education approved a contract with Native American author and entrepreneur, M. Chag Lowry, for the creation of new curriculum based on two graphic novels currently in development. In fulfillment of a California Humanities Grant, the contract to M. Chag Lowry is for the following deliverables:
- Curriculum for 7-8th based on the graphic novel titled Follow the Water.
- Curriculum for 6-8th Grade based on the graphic novel titled Reflections.
- At least three virtual or in person presentations focused on Original Voices Publications, Curriculum, and Community Partnerships
- Creation for story outlines for new graphic novel titled Elements based on Yurok perspectives.
Chag and artist Rahsan Ekedal created Follow the Water, a 14-page comic story set in San Francisco in 1914. This comic introduces the character named Isaac as he meets with the Indigenous man named Ishi. The tale visualizes part of Ishi's story as told from a Native perspective.
Funding has been provided by California Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021
More information on when the books and curriculum will be available for use is forthcoming. Stay tuned!
